Which Baby Gate is Right for your Home?

Configurable Gates

Pros:

Constraints:

  • Not appropriate for top-of-stairs use due bottom bar which can be a tripping hazard

Top of Stairs Gate

Top of Stairs Gates are the only gates sturdy and safe enough to be installed at the top of a stairway.

Pros:

  • They are rigid and sturdy for top of stairs use

  • They don’t have a bottom bar so they don’t pose a tripping hazard

  • They can be operated with one hand while holding a baby.

Constraints:

  • They are as wide as the opening they block, so when they are open they can block the corridor

  • They don’t close automatically so they need to be shut behind you

  • The maximum opening they can protect is 64.25”

Retractable Mesh Gates

Retractable gates are a flexible and aesthetic choice for bottom of stairs and segmenting areas of a home.

Pros:

  • Retracts into a canister when not in use

  • Great for areas where the swing of a gate would be inconvenient

  • They don’t have a bottom bar so they don’t pose a tripping hazard

  • They can be operated with one hand while holding a baby

Constraints:

  • Not appropriate for top-of-stairs use due to flexible fabric

  • Require extra step of locking for maximum safety

  • Maximum opening it can protect is 72”
